Hedge creating dangerous conditions on the road

This hedge has grown over time and despite being hand trimmed now has encroached over the white lines. It hasn’t been cut straight vertically. This forces high side vehicles coming down horns lane to veer into the middle of the road. Cars travelling at speed also move into the middle of the road and then have to react and correct at the corner and pull back across. The lack of white lines often mean they overcorrect and almost leave the road at the corner. (I will submit a different fix my street request for this..) There have been a few recent accidents at this spot due to this in the last month. Additionally any vehicle exiting the residences cannot see up the lane due the the hedge encroachment, this coupled with the ridiculous speed limit on the lane mean that this has become a danger to cars, walkers and horse riders.

  • All wild birds are protected. This includes their nests (whilst in use or being built) as well as any eggs the nest may contain. Under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 (as amended), it is an offence to:
    • intentionally kill, injure or take any wild bird
    • intentionally damage, destroy or take the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built (nests of golden eagle, white tailed eagle and osprey are protected all year round)
    • intentionally destroy an egg of any wild bird
    • intentionally or recklessly disturb certain wild birds or their dependent young while they are nesting (including disturbance of nesting young)
    Although no dates are legally stated between which hedges cannot be trimmed, cut, laid or coppiced, the main bird breeding season is recognised as being between 1 March and 31 July which we adhere to. Please note, if the issue reported is classified by our Highway Officer as an emergency, arrangements will be made to make the hedge safe for both road and pedestrian users in line with our Highways Safety Inspection Policy.

  • We have investigated the issue reported and found that it is on or originating from private land. We have passed the matter onto the Highways Enforcement team, who will triage the issue and may pursue the matter using our powers under the Highways Act 1980. The team will endeavour to update you following the triage stage, to inform you of whether the matter will be pursued further.
