Persistent Flooding on A40

Reported via mobile in the Flooding on a road/footpath category by James Parry at 09:36, Saturday 17 January 2026

Sent to Buckinghamshire Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8706972.

This road has been flooding in this way for decades, without resolution and the footpath becomes impassable after only a couple hours of drizzle. The deepest part of the flood area is directly outside my home and sometimes the water is so deep that I risk flooding the engine of my car if I stop to turn across the traffic into my driveway. I regularly commute by motorcycle, and obviously, balancing the bike to wait for an opportunity to cross the traffic means placing a foot in 8-inch of filthy water which is deeply unpleasant.

Updates

  • If the flooding is caused by a water leak we will report it to the relevant water company, who are responsible for water leaks.

There are occasions when flash flooding overloads the drain/gully, even when a drain/gully is clean and well maintained it can only cope with a certain volume of water at one time, a sudden and heavy downpour can still cause flooding especially if the road is in a low lying area, this generally clears away over a matter of hours.

The Highway Officer is only able to inspect the drain when the water has cleared away, this will be done within 10 days and if required, an order will be raised to clear the drain.

  • Update

Even when a gully is clean and well maintained it will only cope with a certain volume of water at one time, a sudden and heavy downpour can still cause flooding especially if the road is in a low lying area, this generally clears away over a matter of hours.

If the water has not cleared within 24 hours please call us on 0300 131 6000, our team will log this as an emergency, out of hours you will be redirected the out of hours emergency team.

Our priority during flash flooding is to protect the public who are using the highway, we will only respond to requests to provide sandbags in extreme emergencies to specific locations, please note we have no statutory duty to provide them.

You can buy sandbags from most DIY stores; however, you should be aware.

    • They are heavy and can therefore be difficult to handle.
    • They retain sewage when they come into contact with floodwater.
    • The bag material used is biodegradable and will disintegrate if left in contact with water for long periods of time.
    • It is your responsibility to ensure they are removed when no longer needed.

The National Flood Forum recommends you use flood resistant products to help prevent water from entering the property.

Further information can be found on our Website regarding flooding issues and who to contact in the event your business or property is flooded
