Marlow Bridge Width Restriction - Damage to Car!

Reported via mobile in the Bridges category anonymously at 15:23, Sunday 23 March 2025

Sent to Buckinghamshire Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7323001.

Today I drive over Marlow bridge in my Range Rover Sport and to my horror found that the width limit is 6’6” and I did not see any warning signs to this effect. My car is only just able to go though this limit and, as I could not turn round due to traffic, I had to drive extremely carefully through the limit, but the low bollards you have in place are not visible to the driver when going through them and the near side passenger door got badly scrapped as a result. I just can’t believe that you have put in place such a low design bollard that causes so much potential damage to vehicles legally allowed to cross the bridge. How can I claim against Buckinghamshire Council for the repair to my car for such a poor design of width restriction ?

Updates

  • Not all bridges and structures in Buckinghamshire are the responsibility Highways, other bodies that own bridges and structures include:

  • Network Rail: structures associated with the ‘live’railway
  • National Highways: Motorways
  • Canal and River Trust
  • Rights of Way
  • We undertake annual inspections of structures on the Highway that we are responsible for, including special inspections if needed (e.g., collision damage), we also carry out regular maintenance, along with strengthening works to keep our bridges and structures safe and operational, with a minimum of disruption.

The structures team will carry out an assessment of the bridge and if is our responsibility we will arrange for a site inspection and raise an order to carry out any works required.

If the bridge is not the responsibility of Buckinghamshire Highways we will forward this report to the relevant organisation.
