Gullies blocked causing issues with neighbouring properties

Reported via desktop in the Blocked drain category by Helen Griffiths at 15:45, Friday 10 January 2025

Sent to Buckinghamshire Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6962789.

There are two gullies at this location. These have been blocked for over 12 months. When it rains water comes down Milton Fields that is an unmade road and runs along school lane to these gullies. However when they are blocked, the rainwater runs into the car park of the guide hall. Beacuse of the unmade road, the water is full of particles which quickly block the drainage in the car park and put the guide hall at risk of flooding. These gullies need to be cleaned asap before the spring rains.

Updates

  • This has been passed to the Highway Officer to investigate.

We know that an important part of any road network is the drainage system which is designed to carry water away from the road surface. Even when a gully is clean and well maintained it will only cope with a certain volume of water at one time, a sudden and heavy downpour can still cause flooding especially if the road is in a low lying area.

The Highway Officer is only able to inspect the drain when the water has cleared away, this will be done within 10 days and if required, an order will be raised to clear the drain.

  • Update

The Highway Officer has carried out an inspection and has identified that there is no immediate safety issue, even when a gully is clean and well maintained it will only cope with a certain volume of water at one time, a sudden and heavy downpour can still cause flooding especially if the road is in a low lying area, this generally clears away over a matter of hours.

It is not financially viable for us to action all non-safety issues in isolation, these non-safety issues are added to a package of works for the area. In addition, all our roads are subject to Safety Inspections, and this includes identifying drainage issues, we also have a gully clearance programme where we inspect and clear all 85,000 Buckinghamshire owned gully’s annually.

If your property is in danger of flooding please refer to the flooding information and guidance on the Buckinghamshire website
