Church St, just past boundary of 19 (Vale Cottage), on left hand side of road (if travelling from Dark Lane end)

Reported via desktop in the Flooding on a road/footpath category by Tim Charles Elsenburg at 11:55, Fri 6 December 2024

Sent to Buckinghamshire Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6827165.

Drain situated at a dip in the street with a slope either side, so water runs into it at some speed and in high volumes from both directions during rainfall, bringing with it debris (leaf-fall, mud) which blocks the grille very quickly. Water then pools here until it breaches the boundary of our property and starts to pool along the edge of our house before making its way under our garage door. We have been clearing the drain grille every other day, but we are not always around, and now we are starting to experience property damage including items in our garage and extreme damp coming up from our floors. Last night (5th Dec) we spent 90 mins clearing the drain and bailing water from our boundary in an attempt to stop ingress of water into our garage. We are new to the property, but we know that attempts have been made to address this issue by the previous owner with a raised additional kerb outside the garage door; however with the high rainfall recently, this is now insufficient to keep the property safe and dry.

Updates

  • If the flooding is caused by a water leak we will report it to the relevant water company, who are responsible for water leaks.

There are occasions when flash flooding overloads the drain/gully, even when a drain/gully is clean and well maintained it can only cope with a certain volume of water at one time, a sudden and heavy downpour can still cause flooding especially if the road is in a low lying area, this generally clears away over a matter of hours.

The Highway Officer is only able to inspect the drain when the water has cleared away, this will be done within 10 days and if required, an order will be raised to clear the drain.
