Roadmarks relating to parking across drive to the new houses at 24-24B Mayflower Way are not safe / appropriate.

Reported via mobile in the Parking on double yellow lines category anonymously at 13:33, Fri 1 November 2024

Sent to Buckinghamshire Council 3 days, 21 hours, 3 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 6684076.

The road markings on Mayflower Way alongside the driveway for the new houses at 24-24B Mayflower Way aren’t safe. Parking immediately in front of the driveway is prohibited by the white line, and that is fine. The double yellow lines to the left of the driveway (as you are exiting onto Mayflower Way) preventing parking there, and that is fine. However, parking on the right side of the driveway is permitted right up to the white line. There are vehicles there at all times of the day and as a result they obstruct visibility to the right down Mayflower Way as you exit the driveway. As can be seen from the photos attached, as a result of the cars parked there, you do not have a safe view of the road until you are some way out into the road, and traffic comes along the road too fast for that level of visibility to be safe, especially because there are almost always cars parked along both sides of the road, effectively making it a single car’s width. Exiting the driveway is much like a T junction, and parking within 5-10 metres of a T junction is clearly identified in the Highway Code as being unsafe due to obstruction of visibility. I can supply more photos and videos to demonstrate the issue. Typically, there are large cars or vans parked there, which makes the problem worse, although smaller cars also obstruct the view too. You can’t see down the road, and established vehicles proceeding along the road do not have sufficiently visibility to see you exiting the driveway either. I would suggest this could be resolved by having an additional 5m or so of double yellow lines or other parking prevention on the right hand side as you exit the driveway.

Updates

  • This has been passed to the Highway Officer to investigate, they will carry out an inspection within the next 10 working days.

All our roads are subject to safety inspections, and this includes identifying any markings that are badly damaged or degraded so we may already be aware of this issue and have raised a job to have them refreshed if this is the case we will update you that it is a duplicate job/enquiry.

If we were not aware of this issue, we will update you on what action will be taken, this may include adding the road markings to a package of works to be carried out at a later date.

Please note, the ambient temperature drops, and the air becomes much more humid during the winter months and materials won’t bond with the surface when it’s wet, defeating the purpose of applying them at all. Adding markings to a wet surface will essentially mean they become diluted. The moisture present on the road and also in the air will affect the finished quality of the markings, impacting their appearance and longevity, for this reason we only refresh road markings during winter months if there is a specific safety issue.

There may also be occasions when the issue reported will not be repaired as it has been classified as a minor defect and does not pose any risk to either the safety or the integrity of the highway, these are called minimum recording levels as specified in our Highways Safety Inspection Policy in these cases no action will be taken.
