Traffic Light Incident on the Dual Carriageway, Marlow Hill on Friday, 26 January 2024

Reported via desktop in the Traffic lights & crossings problems with timings category by Mahesh Yanambakkam at 11:41, Monday 29 January 2024

Sent to Buckinghamshire Council 2 hours, 6 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 5504870.

I am writing this letter to inform you about an incident that I witnessed on Friday, 26 January 2024. There were four Wycombe High School Girls waiting to cross the dual carriageway traffic signal from JHGS towards Handy Cross Hub Park & Ride. At exactly 15:52 hrs, the girls started crossing the road in pairs from JHGS side when the green man light was on. Within a few seconds a PPH coach which was idling on the boxed junction & waiting for the traffic to clear, started moving forward towards the children who were already on the road, when it was their right of way moment. The coach driver was neither able to see, nor able to realise that it was a green man for the pedestrians, and he was just a few seconds away from knocking the children down, when he suddenly braked and tooted his horn. I was standing diagonally behind and was able to see one half of the green man on the dual carriageway and also able to see that it was clear red light when the coach was already on the boxed junction. There were at least three JHGS boys, who were also right behind the girls and were crossing the road when they saw the green man. For a moment, I felt that the coach had knocked down the girls as the coach came to a stop so closely to the girls. It was a relief to see the girls walking past the coach within a few seconds.

Everyday I see this issue, and the vehicles which are waiting to get past the dual carriageway signal from HXH towards Marlow Road are always on the boxed junction, and they are also unable to see the pedestrian green man from that side. There are several children from JHGS and WHS who are waiting to cross this section of the road every day and sometimes, I see the children squeezing in between vehicles when the green man light is on, as this pedestrian green man lasts for only a few seconds before it turns red. I have personally seen and experienced this issue, as I have crossed this road several times during school runs. This is a serious safeguarding issue.
